Life starts with humility ...

Yesterday, Viji and I attended the second of our four part child birthing classes. The main topic for the day was Labour. A lady was walking us through the various stages of it, the contractions, the pain and what comfort measures work and when.

"As we were progressing through the various stages of natural birthing, the pain becomes more and more intolerable. There comes a point when it fully consumes you. The distractions and the comfort measures that helped during the earlier stages are of little help now.

You become so focussed on the pain that the outside world is virtually shut out of your mind. You realize there is nothing that can be done by you, your partner, your doula or even the doctors to help ease the pain. You are pretty much onto yourself and at that point you surrender yourself to the natural process and beg for it to drive things to a safe completion. There is an acute sense of humility just before the baby is born."

When she was walking us through this, for once I felt a rather unusual and strong sense of missing out on this enchanting experience - for once, I wish I were born again - a woman this time - just to go through this wonderful experience.

As they say, life starts with humility.

But you and I

O hurry to the ragged wood, for there
I will drive all those lovers out and cry
O, my share of the world, O, yellow hair!
No one has ever loved but you and I.
